There is something about Christmas Eve — candles passing light from hand to hand, familiar carols, the old story told again in a quiet room — that draws people back to church who have not been in years. If that is you, you are exactly who this evening is for. Here is what to know about Christmas Eve at Beaverton First, in the heart of downtown Beaverton.
Our Christmas Eve candlelight service
Each year on December 24, Beaverton First holds a Christmas Eve candlelight service at 4:30 p.m. — joyful music, carols, an encouraging message, and the passing of the light.1 It is family-friendly and come-as-you-are, an early-evening time that works well for children and for anyone who would rather not be out late.
What the evening is like
The service runs about an hour and is meant to feel warm and unhurried — carols you know, the Christmas story from Scripture, a short and hopeful message, and candlelight to close. You do not need to bring anything, know the songs, or be a member. Children are welcome, and so is anyone for whom this is the one service they attend all year. As an openly affirming, Reconciling congregation, we mean it when we say everyone is welcome at the manger.
Whoever you are, and however long it has been, there is a candle here for you.
